History of JEEP
Jeep is a registered trademark of Chrysler since 1987. But the first jeep prototype Bantam BRC was first produced in 1941 by American Bantam for the US Army and allies during World War II and postwar period. It was the oldest
off-road vehicle (also sport utility vehicle – SUV) in the world which was then followed by the Willys-Overland and Ford’s jeep.
There are many explanations of the origins of the word “jeep”. The most common opinion said this comes from the label “GP” for “General Purpose” or “Government Purpose” which was phonetically slurred into the word Jeep. However, R. Lee Ermey argued this and said that “G” was for government use and “P” designated its 80-inch wheelbase. In fact, some said that soldiers during the World War II named the off-road vehicle after Eugene the Jeep, a character in Popeye cartoons that could go anywhere.
